Freeport to close part of Main Street to help struggling businesses

Part of Main Street in Freeport will be closed for the next two weekends to help struggling businesses.The road will be closed between Howard and Bow streets from 8 a.m. Saturday until 8 p.m. Sunday.The town hopes the closure will encourage more pedestrians to walk in the area and allow shops and restaurants to operate safely in the street.There will be covered seating areas for shoppers and sanitization stations.”Most importantly is, are people being safe? Are they wearing masks? Are they practicing social distancing? That is so important, and we really want to be sure that people who are utilizing this space are really being safe, and so we’ll be looking at that really closely,” Visit Freeport Executive Director Kelly Edwards said.If the closure helps businesses, it could continue on weekends through Labor Day.
