‘I never expected anything like this’: World War II veteran gets 100th birthday celebration

The celebration for Homer Groger’s 100th birthday is something he could’ve never imagined.”I never expected anything like this,” Groger told our sister station WLWT.His Kentucky community put on a parade for the World War II Navy Veteran, showing Groger what he means to his VFW post and his neighborhood.“As soon as I pulled up and saw the amount of people and motorcycles here, we got goosebumps instantly; it’s awesome to see the people come out,” says James Toebbe, VFW Post Commander 6095. “He turns 100 years old and he was supposed to be the grand marshal of our Covington Memorial Day parade. So since the parade was canceled, we decided to bring the parade to him.”Groger said this might be his best birthday yet and wanted to thank his family, friends and neighbors who helped him celebrate.”They have all been good — but this is a surprise. I never expected anything like this,” he said. “All I have to say is thank you for coming; I didn’t think they thought that much of me, but I guess think a little of me.”Watch the video above to see the celebration.
