Longtime MaineDOT employee dies of coronavirus, governor says

A longtime employee of the Maine Department of Transportation has died of the coronavirus, Gov. Janet Mills announced Sunday.The employee, a man in his 60s from Cumberland County, was one of two deaths related to the virus that were reported Sunday afternoon.The other death was a woman in her 80s from Cumberland County. Both were hospitalized before their deaths, state health officials said.”Our entire MaineDOT family mourns this tragic loss,” MaineDOT Commissioner Bruce Van Note said . “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to our colleague’s family and friends, and we remain forever grateful for his service to the State of Maine.”Officials said that based on the employees travel history and the fact that he did not return to work after his vacation, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the risk to other MaineDOT employees is extremely low.There have been a total of three coronavirus-related deaths in the state. The first case was announced Friday.Due to privacy laws, Maine CDC is limited in releasing further details.
