Maine State Police investigate the death of a man after a fight in Auburn

Police are investigating the death of a man after a fight outside an apartment complex in Auburn.Auburn Police were called to 116 Hampshire Street just after 11 p.m. Wednesday after someone called 911 and said two men were fighting.Police said when they arrived, they found a man in his 40s had been stabbed in the chest.He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he died from his injuries. His name was not being released until family members could be notified. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, police said.The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit joined the investigation with Auburn Police. State police said the second man involved in the fight, who is in his 20s, left the scene on foot. Investigators said they know who he is but had not been able to locate him as of Thursday morning.“We want to find out what triggered that altercation, so his statement is going to be very important to us in this complex investigation,” Maine State Police Lt. Mark Holmquist said.Police said they believe alcohol was involved in the altercation and are investigating the use of illegal drugs.Investigators said they would be on scene all day Thursday gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
