Massachusetts-based marijuana business gets licence to open South Portland shop

The state’s Office of Marijuana Policy announced Tuesday the first marijuana businesses that can begin operating this fall. Only one Portland area retail location, Theory Wellness, is among the first licensed businesses that can begin selling marijuana for recreational use to adults 21 and older beginning Oct. 9. Also receiving licenses were three cultivation facilities, another retail store in Waldo County and one marijuana testing facility.Theory Wellness is based in Massachusetts and currently operates three retail stores in the Bay State. The South Portland store, located at 198 Maine Mall Rd., is currently under construction, but the owners say they fully intend to begin serving customers as soon as the state will allow on Oct. 9. Some within the Portland-area’s existing medical marijuana industry believe Maine-based businesses should be given priority when it comes to licensing. The Office of Marijuana Policy says their decision making happens on a first-come, first-served basis in terms of meeting their requirements for opening. “We have handful that have one or two little items that they need to get out of the way before we’re able to issue them an active license, so I’d say between now and Oct. 9 the retail sales launch date you’ll see a significant increase in the number of active licenses,” said Erik Gundersen, director of the Office of Marijuana Policy. Brandon Pollock, CEO of Theory Wellness, says the business has the track record and infrastructure to work with and support Maine small businesses. “On the supply side, start to network with a lot of the cultivators in Maine that the state is famous for. We’re really excited to have such a wide variety of talented world-class growers and extract artists up in Maine that we can showcase in the retail environment,” said Pollock. Gundersen says the Office of Marijuana Policy will continue to process applications for licenses on a rolling basis, increasing the number of businesses authorized to begin retail sales next month.
