Portland man drowns in Back Cove after fleeing police

According to Portland police, they were called out to the area of the Miss Portland Diner just after 1 p.m. Sunday, for a report of someone being assaulted. The alleged suspect, a 25-year-old male, fled across the interstate and made his way to the Back Cove Running Path prior to the arrival of police. Police say they witnessed him jump into the water after officers spotted him on the trail near the I-295 off ramps. A fire department rescue boat was launched and crews pulled him from the water. According to police, the man was in the water for approximately 24 minutes. He was treated at the scene, and then taken to Maine Medical Center where he died. The victim of the assault, a 24-year-old female, was determined to be the girlfriend of the suspect. She was transported to the Maine Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a witness who tried to help was also assaulted but did not need to be hospitalized. The name of the suspect will not be released until notification to next of kin can be made.
