South Portland home badly damaged by fire

A house fire in South Portland prompted a significant response from police and firefighters Thursday night. Multiple crews were called to the scene around 10 p.m. Flames badly damaged the front of the home on Lowell Street. Responders say the only person inside made it out of the home safely. Flames were contained around 10:30 p.m., but crews remained on scene to snuff out hot spots and monitor the situation. Firefighters have not determined an exact cause but believe the fire was started accidentally.
