Westbrook police complete mandatory use of force training

Members of the Westbrook Police Department took part in mandatory use of force training this week.The training was part of an effort to clarify the department’s use of force policy to ensure all officers know when force is allowed and how much is permissible.Police Chief Janine Roberts said this kind of training is routine for her officers.“In the last two to three years, the training has fallen in the month of September. The timing of it is normal. It is not connected to recent events across the country. It is required by policy to review the use of force policy on an annual basis,” Roberts said.The training included scenarios involving mental illness and domestic violence, as well as a refresher course in handcuffing techniques.
